Twenty years later and marginally slimmer the new 3.6-litre Turbo Cabriolet pumps out a whopping 473 bhp and is capable of 0-62mph in 3.8sec with our Tiptronic version. Two decades and its 1.6 seconds quicker! And of course, being four-wheel drive there’s immense grip even when it’s raining.

Full throttle in the Turbo releases a sort of inexorable flood of speed due to the turbos Variable Vane Technology. In laymans terms this means they work like small boosters when the revs are low — good for immediate response — and rockets when the revs are high. It is sensationally rapid, and awareness of this is only increased by taking away the roof that would normally be between you and the blurring countryside. The standard wind deflector does a good job at eliminating buffeting in the cabin too and it’ll keep doing a good job all the way to 192mph. Amazingly the Turbo Roadster loses no performance in comparison with its coupe sibling with the same drag coefficient of 0.31 (with the hood up).

Together with the double-stacked rear wing, which automatically extends at speeds from 80mph, this car doesn’t accelerate. It teleports. Bang, and you’re in the next space and time continuum!
